Day by Day

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek starts through lush rainforest filled with birdlife, waterfalls, and giant trees. The trail climbs gradually to Mandara Hut (2,700m), your first overnight stop. After a short rest, you can take an optional walk to the Maundi Crater viewpoint for fantastic views of Northern Tanzania.

You leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, where the landscapes become more open with giant heathers and unique plants like the Kilimanjaro giant lobelia. The trail is moderate with gentle ups and downs until you reach Horombo Hut (3,720m). The views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks are spectacular, especially during sunset.

Today is a full acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. You can rest at the hut or take a short acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi Saddle. This extra day significantly increases your chances of a successful summit. You return to Horombo Hut for lunch, dinner, and another night.

After breakfast, you continue upward through the alpine desert. The landscape becomes more rugged and dry as you cross the saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m) in the afternoon. The rest of the day is for resting, early dinner, and preparing for the midnight summit attempt.

Summit day begins around midnight. Your guides lead you on a steep climb toward Gillman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is demanding but incredibly rewarding. After enjoying the sunrise from the highest point in Africa, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a meal and short rest. You then continue down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Your final trekking day takes you back through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver will meet you for the transfer back to the hotel for a well-deserved shower and relaxation after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.
