Hiking Overview

The Machame route—also known as the “Whiskey Route”—is one of the most scenic and popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is famous for its breathtaking variety of landscapes, including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and spectacular views of the Southern Icefields.

The Machame route is designed for trekkers seeking a more adventurous and rewarding climb. It is a fast-paced itinerary, best suited for physically fit hikers who are prepared for a challenging but achievable ascent.

One of the key advantages of the  Machame route is its “climb high, sleep low” profile, which helps improve acclimatization. This approach significantly increases the chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.

For travelers who have a few extra days in their schedule, Machame route is an excellent option. One or two additional days of acclimatization can make a big difference in the success rate, so trekkers who choose this route reach the summit more often, despite the fact that this is a more challenging hike than Marangu Route

On the Machame Route, the Barranco Wall is a steep rock face that may look scary at first. It is one of the biggest challenges on this route, but it is not as difficult as it seems. You just need to watch your steps carefully and sometimes use your hands to help you climb.

Reaching the top is worth it because of the amazing views. Most climbers on the Machame Route take about one to one and a half hours to complete it.

DAY 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure to Kilimanjaro via Machame route begins at Machame Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trail starts in dense rainforest, with fresh air, tall trees, and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys. The path gradually ascends to Machame Camp (3,000m), where you settle in for your first night on the mountain.

After breakfast, you climb out of the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, and see the beauty of Machame route, the views open up as you walk over volcanic rock formations and heather-covered slopes. The trail is steep but rewarding. By afternoon, you reach Shira Camp (3,840m), located on a plateau with wide views of the Shira Cathedral and the western side of Kibo Peak.

Today is an important acclimatization day. The trail takes you up to Lava Tower (4,630m), where you stop for lunch and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Afterward, you descend into the Barranco Valley, enjoying stunning views of the Great Barranco Wall. You arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960m), one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain, surrounded by giant Senecio plants.

You begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall—a challenging but non-technical ascent that rewards you with incredible panoramas from the top. The trail continues through the Karanga Valley before joining the upper alpine desert zone. By afternoon, you reach Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base camp before the summit. You will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Today is summit day. Around midnight, you begin the final ascent under the stars. The trail is steep and cold, but your guides will lead you steadily toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. A short final push brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m), where you spend the night.

Your final trekking Kilimanjaro via Machame route passes through the lush forest zone, where the air becomes warmer and thicker with oxygen. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver will pick you up and transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower and celebration after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.
