Safari Overview

This 8-day Great Migration river crossing safari offers a rich and immersive journey through Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations, including Tarangire National Park, Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti, and the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater. The adventure begins in Tarangire, a beautiful and less-crowded park famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and seasonal rivers that attract a wide variety of wildlife, especially during the dry season.

From here, the safari continues into the vast Serengeti ecosystem, where the central Serengeti offers exceptional year-round game viewing with abundant resident wildlife and high concentrations of predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. As you explore these endless plains, you will witness the natural rhythm of the wild, with grazing herbivores spread across the savannah and predators constantly on the move.

The journey then gradually leads you to the northern Serengeti, where the landscape becomes more rugged and scenic, with rolling hills, riverine forests, and the life-giving Mara River forming the stage for one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth the Great Migration.

The highlight of this unforgettable Great Migration safari is the chance to witness the famous Mara River crossings, best experienced from mid-July to October, with peak action typically occurring in August and September when large herds gather at the riverbanks.

These crossings are unpredictable and often require patience, but the reward can be extraordinary as thousands of wildebeest and zebras plunge into the river, facing strong currents and crocodiles in a chaotic and emotional struggle for survival.

To maximize your chances of witnessing this incredible event, you will stay in carefully selected accommodations in the northern Serengeti such as Mara Mara Tented Lodge, Serengeti Bushtops Camp, or Mara River Lodge, all strategically located near key crossing  and migration routes, offering both comfort and proximity to the action.

Beyond the migration, this safari also provides outstanding opportunities to spot the Big Five, particularly in the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dense wildlife population and rare black rhino sightings.

Throughout the journey, you can expect diverse and ever-changing landscapes, expert-guided game drives in 4×4 safari vehicles, and a blend of authentic wilderness experiences with comfortable lodges and tented camps, making this safari an ideal choice for travelers seeking both adventure and a deep connection with nature through the awe-inspiring Great Migration.

DAY 1: ARUSHA TO TARANGIRE -Start of Your Great Migration Safari

Your Great Migration safari begins with an early morning departure from Arusha to Tarangire National Park. The drive takes you through scenic countryside and Maasai villages, offering a glimpse into local culture.

Upon arrival, enjoy a full-day game drive in Tarangire, famous for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. The Tarangire River attracts a wide range of wildlife including lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and antelope species. Your guide will take you to the best wildlife viewing spots while sharing insights into animal behavior. In the late afternoon, drive to Marera Valley Lodge in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, depart for the Serengeti via the beautiful Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at the crater viewpoint for stunning panoramic views before continuing your journey.

As you enter the Serengeti, your Great Migration safari truly begins, with vast plains stretching endlessly and wildlife appearing across the horizon. Enjoy a game drive en route to the Central Serengeti (Seronera), where predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are commonly seen. Arrive at KumbuKumbu Luxury Tented Camp in the afternoon and enjoy dinner under the stars.

Today your Great Migration safari intensifies as you journey north toward the Mara River, following the migration route. After breakfast, depart with packed lunch and begin a full-day game drive through changing landscapes.

As you travel, your guide will track herds using experience and real-time information, increasing your chances of encountering large heards of wildebeest and zebras. The drive itself is rich with wildlife elephants crossing your path, giraffes walking gracefully, and predators scanning the plains.

As you approach the Northern Serengeti, the terrain becomes more rugged with rolling hills and river systems. Arrive at Olmorijo Tented camp in the afternoon, followed by a short evening game drive near the river, where early signs of crossing activity may be visible.

This is the most anticipated day of your Great Migration safari. After an early breakfast, head out toward the Mara River, where thousands of wildebeest gather before attempting to cross.

You may spend hours observing the herds as they build courage, move back and forth, and suddenly surge into the river in dramatic fashion. The crossings are intense and unpredictable, often involving crocodiles waiting in the water and predators nearby.

Your guide will position the vehicle at strategic viewpoints to give you the best possible experience while maintaining safety and respect for wildlife. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush and continue observing wildlife throughout the day. Return to camp in the evening, filled with unforgettable memories.

Another full day in the Northern Serengeti gives you a deeper and more rewarding Great Migration safari experience. Since river crossings depend on animal movement, this extra day significantly increases your chances of witnessing multiple crossings.

You will explore different sections of the Mara River and surrounding  tracking herds and observing quieter moments of the migration such as grazing, resting, and interactions between animals. You may also encounter lions, leopards, hyenas, and elephants in this less crowded part of the park. The day offers both thrilling action and peaceful observation, ending with a relaxing evening at camp.

After breakfast, begin your journey back to the Central Serengeti with a game drive en route. This transition allows you to experience different ecosystems within the Serengeti, adding depth to your Great Migration safari.

The Seronera region is known for its permanent water sources, making it a hotspot for predators. Your guide will take you through key wildlife areas where you may witness lions hunting, cheetahs chasing prey, or leopards resting in trees. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before arriving at your camp in the afternoon. Spend the evening relaxing and reflecting on your safari experiences.

After a morning game drive, depart the Serengeti and head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This final stretch of your Great Migration safari offers more opportunities for wildlife sightings as you exit the park.

As you reach the crater rim, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Ngorongoro Crater below a vast, wildlife-rich caldera. The cooler climate and lush greenery provide a refreshing contrast to the Serengeti plains. Spend the evening at Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp enjoying the peaceful surroundings and preparing for your final safari day.

On your final day, descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. This unique ecosystem offers one of the most concentrated wildlife experiences in Africa, making it a perfect ending to your Great Migration safari.

As you explore the crater floor, you may encounter black rhinos, large lion prides, elephants, buffalo, and flamingos along the lake. Your guide will take you to key  such as hippo pools and open grasslands for optimal viewing. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by stunning scenery before ascending the crater in the afternoon. You will then drive back to Arusha, marking the end of your unforgettable safari journey.
