Day by Day

DAY 1: Londorosi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)mp

Your journey starts at Londorosi Gate for registration before driving to the trailhead. The trek begins through dense rainforest filled with wildflowers, birdlife, and possible sightings of colobus monkeys. The walk is gentle and enjoyable. By late afternoon, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) for your first night on the mountain.

After breakfast, you leave the forest and climb steadily into the moorland zone. The trail opens up with stunning views as you cross Shira Ridge. You continue across the wide Shira Plateau until you reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850m). This long day provides excellent acclimatization and spectacular scenery across the plateau.

Today follows the important “climb high, sleep low” method. You gradually ascend through the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4,630m), where you stop for lunch and adjust to the higher altitude. After spending time at this elevation, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960m), surrounded by giant Senecio plants and towering cliffs.

You begin by climbing the iconic Barranco Wall—a physically demanding but non-technical ascent. From the top, the views of the southern glaciers and valleys are breathtaking. The trail continues through ups and downs before reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m). This shorter day helps your body acclimatize for the summit push.

After breakfast, you ascend steadily toward Barafu Camp (4,673m), passing through rocky and barren landscapes. On arrival, you rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your equipment for the midnight summit attempt. From Barafu, you can see the summit ridge clearly—a motivating sight before the big climb.

Summit day begins around midnight. Led by your guides, you climb steadily toward Stella Point (5,756m). As the sun rises, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final night on the mountain.

Your last day is a gentle descent through the rainforest, where humidity and fresh air return. At Mweka Gate, you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver meets you for the transfer back to your hotel, where you can enjoy a warm shower and celebrate your Kilimanjaro achievement.
