The Lemosho Route is one of the most beautiful and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins on the western side of the mountain and offers a quiet, scenic, and less crowded approach during the first days. The 8-day version is challenging but provides good acclimatization with the “climb high, sleep low” principle. The route passes through lush rainforest, scenic valleys, and dramatic ridges before joining the Machame Route and climbing toward the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Lemosho Route
8 Days | 7 Nights
2 Pax Min
Your journey starts at Londorosi Gate for registration before driving to the trailhead. The trek begins through dense rainforest filled with wildflowers, birdlife, and possible sightings of colobus monkeys. The walk is gentle and enjoyable. By late afternoon, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) for your first night on the mountain.
After breakfast, you continue climbing out of the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The trail opens up with wide views as you cross Shira Ridge and descend gently to the Shira Plateau. You arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,500m), one of the best viewpoints for watching the sunset over the Shira volcanic formations.
Today is a short but important acclimatization day. You trek slowly across the Shira Plateau, enjoying open landscapes, volcanic rock formations, and stunning views of Kibo Peak. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) by early afternoon. This extra time helps your body adjust to the altitude, improving success on summit night.
This day follows the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. You ascend through the alpine desert to reach Lava Tower (4,630m), where you stop for lunch. After spending time at the higher altitude, you descend into the Barranco Valley with impressive views of the Great Barranco Wall. You arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960m), surrounded by giant Senecio plants and steep cliffs.
You begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging but fun scramble that offers spectacular views. The trail continues through a series of ridges and valleys, eventually reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m). This is a shorter day designed to improve acclimatization and allow rest before the summit push.
After breakfast, you climb steadily toward Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base camp for the final ascent. The landscape becomes more rugged as you move into the high-alpine desert. Upon arrival, you enjoy an early dinner and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Barafu offers dramatic views of the summit ridge and Mawenzi Peak.
Summit day begins around midnight under the stars. Your guides lead you on a steep, steady climb toward Stella Point (5,756m). As the sun rises, you make the final walk along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final night.
Your last day is a gentle descent through the rainforest, where humidity and fresh air return. At Mweka Gate, you sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver meets you for the transfer back to your hotel, where you can enjoy a warm shower and celebrate your Kilimanjaro achievement.
