Detailed Itinerary

Day by Day

ARRIVAL DAY: Tanzania - Moshi

Altitude: ~900m | Hiking: None | Acclimatization: Rest & preparation

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. This day is entirely dedicated to rest after your international journey. Your guide meets you for a detailed briefing covering safety procedures, altitude sickness awareness, packing checks, and expectations for each stage of the climb.

Although no trekking is done, this day is very important for early acclimatization. Rest, hydration, and mental preparation help your body begin adjusting before entering higher altitudes.

Distance: ~6 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Altitude gain: +550m | Acclimatization: Gentle rainforest start

After breakfast in your hotel you will be given an overall briefing from your guide. At 9am you will be met by our staff, who will drive you to the Western side of Mt. Kilimanjaro and to the Londrossi Gate, where our guides and porters will prepare and pack the equipment and supplies Once at the gate you will be given a packed lunch and after registration with the Kilimanjaro Park office, we will drive for another 45mins to Lemosho Glades where your trek will begin with ascending into the rainforest.

You will ascend for approx. 3 hours in dense rain forest which could be very wet and muddy so be ready with your gaiters and trekking poles. During the trek we will have a break and you can enjoy the rest your packed lunch. We will reach the Mti Mkubwa Camp also known as ‘Big Tree’ Camp in late afternoon. After arrival, you will be taken to your camp and tent which has already been set up by the porters who ran ahead, where you will be greeted with boiled drinking water and hot washing water. Once you have freshened up and settled in, a hot dinner will be served in the mess-tent.

Distance: ~8 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Altitude gain: +850m | Acclimatization: Moderate gain

You gradually leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes thinner and the landscape more open. Giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and wide views dominate the scenery. The air becomes noticeably cooler and thinner as you climb higher.

This is your first significant altitude gain, so pacing is extremely important. You may begin to feel mild fatigue as oxygen levels drop. The trail offers your first clear views of Kibo Peak, building excitement for the summit ahead. Hydration and slow walking are key for successful adaptation.

Distance: ~7 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Altitude gain: +350m | Acclimatization: Active acclimatization day

Today is shorter and focused on adaptation. You cross the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The terrain is relatively flat, allowing your body to adjust comfortably while still gaining altitude.

In the afternoon, guides may lead an optional acclimatization hike, where you ascend several hundred meters and return to camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is essential for improving oxygen efficiency and reducing altitude sickness risk. The scenery is open, dramatic, and often includes views of glaciers on clear days.

Distance: ~9 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Altitude gain: +350m | Acclimatization: Northern circuit transition

You now enter the remote northern circuit of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the least crowded and most scenic sections of the mountain. The trail feels wild and isolated, with fewer trekkers and uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscapes.

Optional short climbs to higher elevations may be done before descending to Moir Hut for overnight rest. This controlled exposure to higher altitude strengthens your body’s adaptation. The silence and vast openness create a deep sense of wilderness and adventure.

Distance: ~8 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Altitude change: slight descent | Acclimatization: Stabilization phase

The trail continues along the northern slopes with sweeping views toward Kenya’s plains on clear days. The terrain is rocky and undulating, requiring steady footing but not technical climbing.

A slight descent helps reduce physical strain while maintaining high-altitude exposure. This balance allows your body to recover while continuing acclimatization. The route remains quiet and remote, offering a strong sense of isolation and natural beauty.

Distance: ~8 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Altitude loss: -120m | Acclimatization: Recovery + adaptation

You traverse alpine desert terrain with gradual ups and downs. The environment is dry, rocky, and exposed, with strong sunlight during the day and cold temperatures at night.

This is a balancing day designed to stabilize your body before the final ascent. The steady pace allows fatigue to reduce while maintaining altitude adaptation. Mental focus becomes increasingly important as you approach higher camps.

Distance: ~5 km | Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Altitude gain: +850m | Acclimatization: Final summit preparation

The trail becomes steeper and more demanding as oxygen levels drop significantly. Every step requires more effort, so progress is slow and controlled. The landscape is barren, volcanic, and dramatic, with few signs of vegetation.

Upon arrival at School Hut, you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Dinner is served early, and climbers try to rest before the midnight departure. This is a crucial mental preparation stage before summit night.

Distance: ~20 km | Hiking time: 12–15 hours | Altitude gain/loss: +1,145m / -4,255m | Acclimatization: Summit achievement

Summit night begins around midnight in freezing temperatures. You ascend slowly in darkness using headlamps, with frequent breaks due to altitude and steep terrain. Reaching Stella Point at sunrise is a major milestone, followed by the final push to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating and taking photos, you begin a long descent through glaciers, alpine desert, and rainforest zones. Oxygen levels increase gradually, making breathing easier but legs increasingly tired. At Mweka Gate, you receive your summit certificate and complete your unforgettable journey on Mount Kilimanjaro.
