Detailed Itinerary

Day by Day

ARRIVAL DAY: MOSHI KILIMANJARO

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you are met after passing through customs. You will be Transferred to Maridadi Hotel in Moshi and have a comprehensive briefing and equipment check with your climbing manager and your guide.

Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Distance: ~11 km
Altitude gain: +1,200m
Acclimatization: First exposure to altitude

Your adventure begins at Machame Gate, where formal registration takes place and you meet your mountain crew. After a briefing, you enter the dense rainforest, one of the most vibrant ecosystems on Kilimanjaro. The trail winds through thick vegetation, giant trees, and hanging moss, with bird calls echoing through the forest. The air is humid, and the path can be muddy, requiring careful footing.

This is a long first day with a significant altitude gain, so your guides will enforce a slow pace to help your body begin adjusting. You’ll notice your breathing gradually deepening as you climb higher. Frequent breaks are taken to hydrate and maintain energy. By the time you reach Machame Camp, the air is cooler and thinner, and you’ll begin to feel the transition from lowland forest to high mountain environment.

Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Distance: ~5 km
Altitude gain: +850m
Acclimatization: Moderate gain with steady pacing

The second day marks a dramatic change in scenery. You leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes shorter and more scattered. The trail is steeper in sections, and the ground shifts to rocky paths with expansive views.

As you ascend, temperatures drop and the air becomes noticeably thinner. You may start to feel mild effects of altitude such as slight headaches or fatigue, which are normal at this stage. The pace remains slow and controlled to allow proper acclimatization. Reaching Shira Camp on the plateau offers breathtaking views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes, making this a rewarding day both physically and visually.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Altitude gain/loss: +780m up / -670m down
Acclimatization: Critical “climb high, sleep low” day

This is the most important acclimatization day of the entire Machame climb. You begin with a gradual ascent toward Lava Tower, moving into an alpine desert environment where vegetation is minimal and conditions are harsher. The trail becomes more rugged, and the reduced oxygen makes the hike feel more demanding.

At Lava Tower, you reach over 4,600 meters, where the air is significantly thinner. Many climbers experience shortness of breath, fatigue, or mild headaches here—this is a normal part of acclimatization. After spending time at this altitude, you descend to Barranco Camp. This descent is crucial, allowing your body to recover while benefiting from high-altitude exposure. Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic camps, surrounded by towering cliffs and unique giant plants.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: ~5 km
Altitude gain: +75m (with multiple ascents and descents)
Acclimatization: Active adaptation

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rock face that appears challenging but is manageable with guidance. Climbers often use hands for balance as they navigate narrow sections. Reaching the top provides a strong sense of accomplishment and stunning panoramic views.

After the climb, the trail continues across ridges and valleys, involving several ups and downs. Although the net altitude gain is small, the constant movement plays an important role in acclimatization. You walk at a steady pace, taking breaks to manage energy and breathing. Arriving at Karanga Camp in the afternoon allows time to rest and prepare for higher altitude.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~4 km
Altitude gain: +605m
Acclimatization: Final preparation for summit

Today’s trek is shorter but takes place in a harsh, high-altitude environment. The landscape becomes barren, with no vegetation and strong winds. Every step requires more effort due to reduced oxygen levels, and the pace is deliberately slow.

Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you enter the final stage of the climb. The camp is exposed and cold, often with strong winds. After lunch, you rest, hydrate, and receive a detailed briefing about the summit attempt. You prepare your gear, eat an early dinner, and try to sleep for a few hours before the midnight ascent. Mental preparation becomes just as important as physical readiness.

Hiking time: 10–14 hours
Distance: ~17 km
Altitude gain/loss: +1,255m up / -2,795m down
Acclimatization: Maximum altitude exposure and rapid descent

Summit day begins around midnight in extremely cold conditions. You climb slowly in darkness, following a zigzag path up steep volcanic slopes. The pace is very slow, focusing on controlled breathing and steady movement. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the climb.

Reaching Stella Point at sunrise is a major milestone, offering incredible views above the clouds. From there, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you begin a long descent. The return is physically demanding on the legs, but the increasing oxygen levels make breathing easier. You eventually reach Mweka Camp, exhausted but fulfilled.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Distance: ~10 km
Altitude loss: -1,460m
Acclimatization: Full recovery

The final day is a gentle descent through lush rainforest. The trail is easier and oxygen-rich, making breathing comfortable again. You walk at a relaxed pace, reflecting on the journey and the achievement of reaching the summit.

At Mweka Gate, you receive your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew. This marks the successful completion of your climb on Mount Kilimanjaro—a life-changing adventure and a true personal accomplishment.
